Wi-tribe and Packet One International sign HOA to boost Asian WiMAX industry

Posted by Bilal Ahmed On Wednesday, September 30, 2009 0 comments

The Asian WiMAX industry received a further boost with the signing of a Heads of Agreement (HOA) between Wi-tribe and Packet One International (P1i), the international WiMAX global services arm and associated company of Packet One (P1) in Malaysia.
The HOA paves the way for a collaborative partnership on multiple fronts to strengthen the WIMAX industry in Asia particularly to derive and implement best practices for both service providers to significantly boost WiMAX user and customer experience.
Sami Hinedi, Wi-tribe’s Group CEO, said:
“Being major players in the consumer wireless broadband arena, this partnership gives wi-tribe and P1i the opportunity to share a lot of information, which can have tremendous mutual benefit. The HOA will enable Wi-tribe and P1i to share best practices and lessons learnt in product and service development, sales and marketing strategies, and improvement of network performance, customer care and support.”
This agreement will allow Wi-tribe and P1i to explore and share information related to the industry. It will allow both companies to improve in a large number of areas such as customer care; sharing best practices and lessons learned in analysing and improving customer satisfaction and experience. Another major area of understanding will deal with regulatory authorities and how service providers can better cooperate to lobby regulators, deal with non-company topics and respond to regulatory consultations and inquiries.

Commenting on wi-tribe’s recent activities Sami added, “Wi-tribe now has presence in Jordan and Pakistan, and we expect to launch in Philippines soon. The Asian and African markets have tremendous growth potential for broadband services and at Wi-tribe we are constantly looking at new opportunities to expand our presence and offer a convenient, flexible and hassle-free internet experience to our customers.”
“Wi-tribe and P1’s core strategic thrust is to provide a superior customer experience. P1 is Asia Pacific’s first and world’s largest 802.16e 2.3GHz WiMAX network operator and service provider (outside of Korea). It is fast approaching its 100,000 subscribers mark having only launched commercial services in August 2008. As the international global services arm, P1i constantly record and help formulate its best practices to better serve customers; improve service levels and deliver exceptional value through attractive packages and solid networks,” commented Dr PS Tang, Managing Director of P1i.
He added, “This is the basis of our collaboration with wi-tribe, to further enrich each our knowledge resource pool.”
Both Wi-tribe and P1i have extensive experience in acquiring, developing and operating WiMAX networks and hope to accelerate the growth of WiMAX ecosystem in their regions of interest through this collaboration.

Pakistan and China signed memorandum of understanding to cooperate on a number of technology and industry initiatives. One of the MoU is on Global Open Trunking Architecture (Gota) for Emergency Communication and Disaster Control management in Pakistan between Ministry of IT and Telecom (National Telecommunication Corporation) and ZTE Corporation People’s Republic of China.
Wikipedia defines Global Open Trunking Architecture as:
In telephony, GoTa or “Global Open Trunking Architecture” is a CDMA-based digital trunking system. The GoTA system was developed by ZTE, a Chinese manufacturer. The GoTA system can be used for both private and public trunking network applications.
GoTa is capable of providing a variety of trunking services:
* One-to-one private calls and one-to-many group calls* The ability to set the user’s priority* The ability to perform forced insertion/forced release based on the user’s priority* The ability to provide special services such as system paging, group paging, sub-group paging, and dedicated Push-To-Talk services as required* The ability to classify the groups into permanent and temporary groups, in which the group members can be managed by the user.

Obviously, no responsible person would attempt texting while driving. What about checking emails on your phone while driving? I suspect that there are a lot more people who have done that. A recent article about texting and driving prompted a lot of discussion – as expected. One shcool of thought is to enact a law to tackle this. The other point of view (and this is the minority) is that eating or applying make up is also dangerous, why don’t we ban that as well?
Here’s one issue in these contentious times that almost everyone appears to agree on: Driving while typing out text messages on a mobile phone is dumb, potentially deadly and should be banned.
So let’s just ban driving while texting, right? Not so fast. Nothing’s ever that easy, especially when powerful economic interests and different levels of government are involved.
Later this month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to convene a “summit” on “distracted driving.” The issue of driving while texting, or DWT, will be high on the agenda. For the first time, it appears that most major interest groups involved are for doing something to make DWT illegal.

First there’s debate about what distracted driving is. Then there are conflicts of interest.
....Type rest of the post here

Distracted driving is a broad term that can be applied to a wide variety of behaviors. You can be distracted behind the wheel by talking on a mobile phone held in your hand, talking on a phone using an earpiece, or talking on a phone using a hands-free “telematics” system embedded in your car. You can be distracted by a messy cheeseburger or a hot cup of coffee. You can be distracted by an iPod that’s not playing what you want, or a passenger, or a map or paper with directions on it. You can be distracted by a ball game on the radio, or a billboard.
Some safety advocates argue that any use of mobile communications while on the road is dangerous, and should be stopped. On their side is a body of research that suggests that the mere act of talking to someone not in the car—whether the phone’s up against your head, or in a cupholder while you wear an earpiece—is a risky overload of a driver’s cognitive functions.
Texting with your fingers and thumbs, however, is clearly a problem. A recent Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study found that manual text messaging elevated the risk of a crash or near crash to more than 23 times higher than “nondistracted” driving.
Auto makers and their suppliers are working on systems that will allow drivers to send and receive text messages using voice-activated systems. They don’t want those features outlawed.
In the meantime, given how hard it will be for police to enforce legislated bans, the best way to curb texting while driving probably is to make it socially unacceptable, particularly among teens
Where do you stand on all this?

The Big Shift In Handset Market

Posted by Bilal Ahmed On 0 comments

The shift in power for handsets has been going on for about 2 years now and trends have strated emerging, supported by data. Here’s an interesting piece, via GigaOM

If you want to know why Nokia is in trouble, you need to look no further than its market share declines during the second quarter of 2009 in the company’s home market of Western Europe. This region accounts for a majority of its high-end phone sales. During the quarter, Nokia handset sales were down 19 percent (year-over-year), according to market research firm IDC, to about 15.3 million units. Overall handset sales for the quarter were down 6 percent and will be down a total of 10 percent for 2009, IDC says.

....Type rest of the post here
This data exposes Nokia’s Achilles heel. The reason why Nokia is suffering is because it doesn’t have a hit device to address the fast-growing smartphone market. Smartphone sales were up 25 percent to 8.8 million units compared to a year ago, IDC says. That’s about 1.75 million smartphones for the quarter. Guess who’s winning sales in the smartphone category? Apple, which sold about 1.4 million iPhones, and RIM, which sold 1.2 million BlackBerrys during the quarter.
Updated: I asked IDC to share shed some more light on the sales of the smartphone sector for the second quarter of 2009 and they emailed with this nugget of information:
Nokia 57.5%Apple 15.5%Research in Motion 13.2%HTC 8.1%Samsung 3.0%
What we’re seeing is a complete upheaval in the handset market. We’re seeing two traditional powerhouses — Nokia and Sony Ericsson — be upended by North American and Asian competitors, some of them newcomers to the market. These two companies will continue to lose market share for a couple of reasons: Carriers like Vodafone are launching their own smartphone devices and most importantly, Google’s Android-based devices made by companies such as Motorola and HTC are about to hit the market in large numbers in 2010.

Ufone SMS Hoax!

An sms hoax has been floating all around especially on Ufone numbers. Different versions of the message have been forwarded but basically all of these messages ask users to exploit a bug/hack in ufone system by forwarding the message to several people to get some free balance. Now i dont know if its an effort of chocking ufone network or an attempt to give an sms revenue boost to the network. Following are the two of several versions of the message.

Version 1: "UFONE HACKED BY STUDENT OF QUAID_E_AWAM UNIVERSITY .Ye sms without editing ufone k kisi b 6 numbers pe send kro aur os k baad *146# dial kren 15 mints me 1000 sms ka pkg free me ho jae ga aur 5 hour k lie aap sirf ufone numbers pe free cal kr skte ho .it works because of these codes.htp.\\trace\15m5-333s.3[ra-ga-5]+47.locate7\\09 .?ufone.htt.p.web.a.s [eco]%uni@hdnis. Cricket match is always a popular event to watch our country but everywhere else cricket is played, understood and liked. I was also very excited about the match but was also afraid of the possible power failures. It went great for the initial hours but when the match reached the climax at midnight, power company employees showed their dutifulness and switched the power off for an hour.
Now what?

Quickly I tried a few options. First of all, I tuned into a good old FM radio channel that was quick and convenient. At least I could get live score and updates. In addition, I had a few other options for live score updates, for example:

Cricinfo.com on my mobile browser (http://m.cricinfo.com/)
Cricinfo.com widget on Snaptu, a mobile app that is much more cool than a website.
Mobilink cricket companion that is a J2ME app for your phone
Cricinfo’s own J2ME app available from Plusmo
....Type rest of the post here
All of the above are text based cricket score tools and eventually were much slower than that of FM radio. I was still missing the TV as I knew that the power is not going to be available. Then I recalled a service that I tried several months ago. Yes, Mobilink TV. I simply directed my browser to Mobilink TV’s wap site and launched the sports channel on my phone. Within a few seconds I could watch the match live. That was the best thing that happened to me in several days :)
It was an amazing experience. I watched the match for almost 45 minutes. But I must warn and inform you about a few facts here:
The service is very expensive but at that time, it was worth it. It costs Rs. 6/megabyte plus tax. According to a careful calculation, it must have costed me around Rs. 100 or more for these 45 minutes. (I’ll post the exact amount once I get my bill)
The TV transmission sound was crystal clear but you need external speakers for better experience.
The quality of video for a 3 inch screen was moderate. I could hardy read the score at the bottom of the screen but could clearly understand what’s going on in the game.
Like any other internet video solution, there were points when video got stuck for data buffering. May be a few seconds pause every couple of minutes.
There was around 25 seconds delay as compared to normal TV or radio’s live coverage.
And yes, there is a specific set of compatible handsets that runs this service. Not all smart phones are compatible. Even the BlackBerries are not :(
Last but not least, there is a separate access-point setup needed to access these TV streams. Make sure to get the settings by calling the helpline.
In short it was fun to watch cricket without electricity. Lets see how much fun it will be to pay for it :)
Please share your experience if any.

PTCL Earns Rs 9.1 bln

Posted by Bilal Ahmed On 0 comments

PTCL says that it has achieved a profit after tax of Rs 9.151 billion in financial year 2008-09 against a loss of Rs 2.82 billion in the previous year.
Earning per share (EPS) came to Rs 1.79 compared to loss per share (LPS) of Rs 0.55 for FY08. The loss incurred last year was attributed mainly to a one-time spending on account of the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS). The company’s operating profit stood at Rs 10.75 billion as compared to Rs 16.36 billion last year, a decline of 34.2 per cent year-on-year. Other operating income increased by 7.82 per cent to Rs 4.26 billion against Rs 3.95 billion last year.
Though the company posted a profit, shrinking fixed-line subscriber base owing to a change to mobile communications and inclination towards wireless local loop they were causing an overall decline in revenues. Fixed-line teledensity in FY09 stood at 2.20 per cent with total subscribers at 3.60 million against 2.60 per cent teledensity in FY08 and a subscriber base of 4.42 million.

....Type rest of the post here
The fall in revenues on the fixed line front is offset for the most part by international revenues and the broadband segment. In FY09 PTCL’s total broadband subscriber base stood at 200K as compared to just 56K in FY08.
Broadband revenues swell by 200pc, though the segment remains a minor contributor to the overall top line.

Green is in these days. The US cellular company Sprint has come up with an “Eco-friendly” phone which it thinks will help it with winning over those who favor green products. The phone is said to be made up of 80% recycled material and also offers quick access to eco-friendly applications. Sprint has been facing a decline in subscribers and is looking for ways to regain market share. See their marketing approach below. Will you go with a phone company because of their approach towards environment or for that matter, that company’s business practices? or do you care about their service and price above all?

The Global Wireless Markets continued to grow rapidly especially in India and China where the carriers (together) are adding around 20M new subscriptions every month. China crossed the 700M subscriptions mark in July while India’s total went past 450 in Aug. Overall, the global subscriptions penetration is above 64%. During 2009, services revenues further tilted towards data services, increasing 21% from 2008 EOY.
For some leading operators, data is now contributing over 40% of the overall revenues. However increase in data ARPU is not completely offsetting the drop in voice ARPU for most operators. From the true and tested SMS messaging to the new services such as MobileAdvertising, Social Networking, Commerce, Mobile Wallet, and others, different services helped in adding billions to the revenues generated in 2009. US continues to lead Japan and China in total mobile data revenues by a healthy margin.

Telenor Pakistan has become the country’s first telco to have completed a Universal Service Fund project – and that too before time. To celebrate the achievement, Chief Technical Officer Telenor Pakistan Khalid Shehzad and CEO Universal Service Fund Company Parvez Iftikhar jointly inaugurated a BTS (Base Transceiver Station) cell site in district Bahawalpur’s Cholistan desert last week.
This cell site is one of the total 39 sites of USF Bahawalpur project that have been set up for this communication deprived area. USF promotes the development of telecom services in un-served and under-served areas throughout the length and breadth of the country. The fund consists of contributions (1.5% of adjusted revenues) by the Telecom Operators with no government funding involved
The Bahawalpur Cholistan District BTS cell sites set up by Telenor Pakistan will bring coverage to the remotest areas of Cholistan desert and a previously un-served population of 242,000, over an area of 20,000 sq kms. The Bahawalpur Lot covers 22% of the area and 11% of the total estimated population of Punjab Province and includes Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan Districts.

Commenting on the timely completion of the USF project, Chief Technical Officer Khalid Shehzad said, “It is our pleasure to provide deep and wide reach to un-served and under-served areas such as the Cholistan desert. We are pleased with our progress and are hoping to complete all our future projects with the same levels of effectiveness. We believe that such projects are significant in terms of increasing service penetration in the rural areas.”
Universal Services Fund’s CEO, Parvez Iftikhar, while congratulating Telenor Pakistan on the successful completion of the project, said, “USF is going to continue bringing significant advances towards enhancement of telecom services, both in rural as well as urban areas of the country. The completion of the Bahawalpur project is an important step towards the fair and effective utilization of the fund. We are also encouraging our contractors to go for Alternative Energy Solutions and are pleased to know that Telenor Pakistan is taking the initiative in this regard.”
This is the first time a cellular operator has delivered a USF project even before the assigned period of twelve months. Universal Service Fund and Telenor Pakistan entered in the contract to provide basic telephony and data services in un-served areas of Bahawalpur on September 22, 2008. Telenor further plans to energize 19 sites in this Project with solar energy hence pioneering Green Energies in telecommunication sector on mass scale.

Few days ago, we reported about 1 MB DSL for Rs. 299 in rural areas from PTCL – however, we didn’t know then that it was due to Universal Service Fund only.
As per information we have received, USF is already subsidizing the broadbandinternet in various un-served and under-served areas of Pakistan. Reportedly, USF will roll out such initiatives countrywide in phases, based on telecom regions in Pakistan.
Unlike telecom services, the bidding for broadband was on achievement of targets, not the roll-out. Here target means, broadband users, and USF pays on per broadband user basis – the amount per user is decided through bidding.
As a pilot project, Faisalabad Telecom Region has started getting the fruit. Following map will help you understand the status of deployment in better way.

Simply point your browsers to this url: http://210.2.169.131:8000/app/sis.asp?cnic=123 give your CNIC and enter Submit…! That’s it.
By the way, service is still not officially launched, so you may find record not found thingy.
Also make sure that you go to respective service center to find out mobile connections that are your name. Get those numbers blocked immediately, which you are not using. At times, this can be very sensitive as number under your name can be used for some illegal act, so get it blocked, right now!

It is evident that customers are not going to easily forget Telenor and Mobilink’s deed of suspending SMS offerings during Eid – Zong is actually helping them to keep the harsh memories alive.

We can see this ad in two ways,
1 – You need to praise yourself, there is nothing bad in own praising services like Mobilink says Service Quality aur rates par no Samjhota, or Warid calls Pakistan ka best Network. So in this scenario, this ad looks perfectly good, in fact it is supported by logic and fact.
2 – On other side, few (from Telenor and Mobilink) may think that Zong has become very blunt, or say very out spoken. They may term this ad very aggressive.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Dr Mohammad Yasin has said that Pakistan telecommunication sector has been growing faster than that of India with over 62 percent teledensity, encouraging the foreign direct investment (FDI), during an interview with Business Recorder. Dr. Yasin said that India lagged far behind Pakistan with 37 percent teledensity as compared to 62 percent in Pakistan.
He added that Pakistan’s FDI policy was much more liberal than that of India to attract more investment in Pakistan telecom sector. The PTA Chairman said that the ever-growing teledensity of Pakistan was giving new opportunities to the investors for better returns, especially in the field of data services. Services like mobile internet, mobile banking and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) hold fortunes for any wise investor.
“Telecom analysts around the world still believe in Pakistan to be a lucrative market and Business Monitor forecasts that mobile subscribers in Pakistan would hit 100-million mark by next year”, Yasin said. The sector has been growing at a rapid pace where growth rates have become the hallmark. However, slow growth was witnessed for the first time ever last year, he added.
Although slow growth, of only 7 percent, was observed in mobile sector last year, this trend cannot be attributed only to saturation as there are factors like international financial crisis, devaluation of rupee, security situation and re-registration of SIM programme.

....Type rest of the post here

“We do agree that saturation is there, but only in metropolitan areas. Moreover, the people are still keeping more than one SIM. So, one can say that sector would continue to grow though not as fast as before”, he said. He said that PTA was trying level best to bring more growth to the sector and was taking every possible regulatory measure to ensure healthy competition beneficial to the telecom users.
“PTA has taken a number of initiatives which are proving to be very helpful, especially in the field of broadband proliferation, LDI re-emergence, and WiMax popularity”, said Dr Yasin. He further said that PTA was focusing on growth of broadband. Currently the number of subscribers is 0.4 million approximately, whereas growth rate of broadband services was 146 percent in 2008-09.
He said that WiMax has a brilliant future in Pakistan and this is further strengthened by the promising start of companies like Wateen, Wi-Tribe, etc. “With more companies jumping into the market, the competition level will rise to compel the companies to bring down the tariffs, especially CPE charge”, he added.
The PTA Chairman said that in addition, other technologies like Evolution Data Only/Evolution Data Optimised (EVDO) and WorldCall introduced in Pakistan by PTCL are gaining good momentum. He said that Mobileinternet held a very bright future in a country where mobile penetration was more than 57 percent.
“However, the only setback that our mobile subscriber has is low literacy rate that hampers use of internet. Also, the lack of availability of local content is another reason, which could pose problems for wider adoption of internet by mobile community,” he added.
“PTA is now focused on content development and aggregation, especially for educationpurposes”, he said. Dr Yasin said that he did not believe that there was room for monopolies in the sector. “However, we do have to face the Significant Market Player (SMP) operator’s issues with rest of the players”.
“We do determine the SMP operator in each segment of telecom on yearly basis. We have also drafted competition rules that clearly protect operators from any anti-competitive practices by SMP’s”, he added. He said that looking at the current market situation where a feeling of price war was obvious, one could say that product differentiation could be possible on quality and easy availability basis.
Regarding improving ‘Average Revenue Per User’ (ARPU), he said that improvement in ARPU’s data service like m-banking or mobile internet would be the solution. “Maybe, 95 million mobile users will be waiting to open their accounts”, he added. He further said that currently in Pakistan five cellular operators have healthy competitive environment.
“Due to growing revenues and fair competition in the market, I believe that operators will continue to provide telecom services in Pakistan and value-addition and innovation is way forward for telecom operators’ growth”, he said. About 3G service in Pakistan he said, “Each and every technology and service has its future, and it caters a potential segment of the society.”

Recent report of a local Pakistani agency has estimated the price comparison of the telecom related offers, with the basic human needs in Pakistan. According to that interesting report, in just five years the prices of the bread (Roti) increased three times, and the prices of the SMSs becomes 26 times less. In 2003, the price of one SMS was 6 Rs. And the Roti was of just 2 Rs. Now the one SMS can cost upto .19 Rs. The previous President of Pakistan had given the advice to his public to eat cakes instead of Roti, the advice is somewhat understandable, but the cheapness of SMS is a strange thing in comparison. This all report is very obvious to every person living in Pakistan. Every person in Pakistan is facing a good opportunities that are given by the telecom companies, but the Roti prices for the persons living under edge has made them from hand to mouth. In 2004, the SMS price reduced to 5 Rs. And the price of Roti become 2.50 Rs. With an increment of .50 Rs. In the year 2005 the same scenario continued.

....Type rest of the post here
The SMS price reduced to 2 Rs and the Roti become 3 Rs. The story goes on, in the same way and the recent year 2008 analysis shows that the price of the SMS reduced to .33 Rs and the Roti was sell at Rs 5 everywhere. In 2009, the SMS prices become 1 paisa and the Roti is selling at 7 Rs in some parts of the country. Thanks to Mr. Shahbaz Sharif for giving the Roti in 2 Rs. But what is for the rest of the country.
The revenue that is generated from the telecom industry should be consumed on the betterment of the people, because the same revenue is earning from the people of the country.
There is only option that come into the mind, after reading the whole analysis, that option is should we EAT SMS!!!

Rumor: PTCL to Double DSL Speed

Posted by Bilal Ahmed On 0 comments

A rumor had been in the air that PTCL may Double the speeds of existing customer and give Double Speed Internet connections for the same amount as their slower counterpart.
Although this looks like a rumor as it looks sanely impossible that a company may upgrade its services twice while keeping the margins and cost constant as we all remember the Go Broadband campaign from PTCL (almost 6 months back) through which PTCL gave double speeds for the same price to all its customers.
Still we are confirming this news as a sources from PTCL told us that they are very busy in upgrading the services and infrastructure to give new higher and better speeds at the same price. This network up-gradation is already being reported by several newspapers.

....Type rest of the post here
leading on from this everyone using 1 mb services will be getting 2 mb bandwidth and 2 mb will be upgraded to 4 mb at the same price.
We can only welcome this move and give our salutations to PTCL. This Service up-gradation will go step by step (exchange by exchange like before) and looks like its being set up for a huge launch on Eid day as an Eidi Gift for All Pakistani people.
On other side, we are sad for other broadband companies of Pakistan, as they will have to suffer if this rumor turns true.

After Telenor approached PTA with a request to consider the details of Ufone’s Super Ghanta offer and to term it anti-competitive due to its nature of off-net hourly calls, sources have told us that authority has questioned Ufone about its Super Ghanta Offer.
PTA has asked Ufone to justify its latest promotion that offers cross subsidiary hourly calls, round the clock.
Ufone’s spokesperson was not available for the comment.
Ufone, till the filing of this report has been advertising the said promotion (However it has stopped mentioning 6 Paisa per minute tag line – which was actually outshining Telenor’s 10 Paisa promotion).
It merits mentioning here that promotion will remain valid till 28th of Ramadan, so PTA has got little time to cope with the matter.

Also they are enticing people to return their devices and get Rs. 500/- back. Lot is going in a single ad. It is clear to me all is not what the celebration line makes it seem.
How many of these 100,000 are actually connected, using and paying customers?

3 weeks back we reported about PTCL’s this package, in which it would offer unlimited PTCL to PTCL and PTCL to Vfone calls, local and nationwide, bundled with Broadband, primarily aiming home users only.
Now, we are reported that PTCL is secretly offering this package to its selected customers. Our readers got calls at their PTCL numbers from PTCL call center, offering them to convert their PTCL Number to unlimited package.
We are also told that this package is named as “PTCL Unlimited Double Play Package”
Tariffs are as following
Unlimited On Net Calls + 1 MB Broadband = Monthly Rental Rs. 1,999Unlimited On Net Calls + 2 MB Broadband = Monthly Rental Rs. 2,999Unlimited On Net Calls + 4 MB Broadband = Monthly Rental Rs. 5,999
On Net Calls Means: PTCL to PTCL, PTCL to Vfone, local and nation wide – Customers will have to get both Broadband and Landline Package.

....Type rest of the post here
Currently, PTCL has been offering 1 MB broadband connection for Rs. 1,200, meaning that customers will have to pay only Rs. 799 for unlimited PTCL to PTCL and PTCL to Vfone calls (including local and nationwide calls).
Question: Why PTCL is not putting this offer open for everyone?
My anticipation is (I can be totally wrong by the way) that PTCL was ordered by PTA to not to public this package, or advertise it, for a reason that PTCL is SMP (Significant Market Player) both in Landline and in Broadband, thus this package will prove to be anti competitive for the industry. (Again, this is my personal thought, and does not include viewpoint of PTCL and or PTA, we are trying to contact PTCL to know its version)
How to Activate?
You can try your luck by calling 1236 or other PTCL help lines to get this package activated

PTCL Starts Action Against Protesters

Posted by Bilal Ahmed On Friday, September 11, 2009 0 comments

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has initiated disciplinary action against those handful of elements who started uncalled for protests in a bid to hinder the smooth work of the organization, said a senior executive of the company.
PTCL Senior Executive Vice President (Human Resource), Syed Mazhar Hussain told a press conference the company has served show-cause notices to around 180 employees, while another 50 have been suspended from the job.
Referring to the strike call given by Lines Staff Union, Syed Mazhar said the union was using black mailing tactics to which the company did not succumb. Rather, those who were arrested by the administration on various charges were not opposed for grant of bail by the relevant courts of law.
He said the management did not oppose their bail purely on humanitarian grounds besides observing the sanctity of Ramazan.
He said the PTCL Board had already announced an increase in the salaries of the employees in accordance with the earlier rise announced by the government.

He annulled the impression that PTCL had reached any deal with the agitating employees, and said there was no truth in the impression. Answering a question, he clarified that no member was engaged from India in the management of the company.

Various types of wireless local loop technologies exist for the services of users, to provide the best facility of the internet broadband and also the old telephone connections. PTCL is using this technology for connecting the users to the public switched Telephone network (PSTN), just by using radio signals as an alternative of the expensive copper wires. The big advantage of the wireless local loop system is also the cordless access to the networks. That is the reason the WLL is sometimes known as the radio in the loop (RITL). The big advantage of the wireless local loop is the bandwidth availability, as compared to the copper wires. In short, the wireless local loop technology is best for the areas where there is no infrastructure to bring the wires for the telephone connections. PTCL in its long life journey has achieved many milestones. One such benchmark that this big organization has created is the best use of wireless local loop.

....Type rest of the post here
All the necessities that were come in the path of the PTCL is the making of the well established network to the remote areas, hence the use of this wireless technology has brought some really good achievements in making the remote area connect to the whole world. The WLL system is based on a full-duplex radio network that provides local telephone-like service among a group of users. The WLL unit consists of a radio transceiver and the WLL interface assembled in one metal box. Two cables and a telephone connector are the only outlets from the box; one cable connects to a directional antenna and a phone receptacle to connect to a common telephone set. A fax or modem could also be connected for fax or computer communication.
The launch of the GO CDMA WLL service would revolutionize the way people communicate in Pakistan as the quality and services are much better and not to forget the rates. It was a good breakthrough by PTCL. TeleCard has also completed a 3rd generation Wireless communication technology by commercializing the country’s first CDMA 2000 1X service. TeleCard has also got LDI (Long Distance and International) license, and will be one of the carriers competing with PTCL. LDI will be a value added service by TeleCard which will offer international calling to consumers in a different and better way. This renowned telecom company has also brought the revolution in the market by allowing incoming calls on local PCO also called ‘Foree Fone’. TeleCard has more than 40,000 GO CDMA connections active in the market and more than 50,000 active connections both wire line and wireless. TeleCard also has approximately 3 switching facilities with over 150 cell sites and its network reaches over 800 cities and towns

PTA Always Takes Care Of Nation

Is PTA trying to intercept telephone traffic? :
Two weeks earlier Pakistan Telecommunication Authority suddenly announced the news of telecommunication traffic monitoring, and drafted a regulation called “Monitoring and Reconciliation of Telephony Traffic Regulations, 2009”. PTA ordered all network providers to install such systems that make telephone traffic monitoring possible.
Instruction goes as follows:

All landing station and infrastructure licensee(s) shall establish a
Monitoring
System with its interface to the Authority, on its own cost for
the purpose of
monitoring of telecommunication traffic (voice and data)
within one hundred and
twenty days of the notification of these
regulations.”

It is important to tell here that in this regulation it
is made clear
that PTA will have complete monitoring over telephone’s voice and
data
traffic either from inside Pakistan or outside. Customers took it as a real
offence as no one wants that anyone hears him when he/she calls or texts. A
wave
of unrest created among telephone users and this question became the
hot issue
in last few days that whether PTA will intercept the calls or
texts???

PTA Clears its Objectives:
PTA recently has denied the rumor that it will intercept traffic. Moreover PTA resources said that this system is launched for some basic purposes for the betterment and the safety of landline and cell phone users, including:
1) Grey calls detections.
2) Ensuring quality of licensed services.
3) Billing verifications.
PTA resources confidently issued a statement that they have no intentions of intercepting the calls, text messages or emails.
Curbing freedom was the blame PTA was given to in last few weeks. Their spokesman tried to clear that blame by saying that “Monitoring cyber and telecom traffic was never the PTA’s mandate. Hence, the question of curbing freedom of expression does not arise in this particular case.”
He also said that main objective of this regulation is to stop illegal traffic coming from abroad.
Advantages of traffic monitoring:
The draft presented a few days ago was originally designed in November 2008 but now with few amendments it has been given a specific name. PTA resources claim that PTA has saved 1.17 billion minutes through technical system amounting to US 94 million $.
By Looking at these figures and trusting PTA it can be said with quite satisfaction that PTA is doing everything for the betterment of Pakistan industry and not for disturbing the people.

We had reported that Telenor Approached PTA against Ufone’s Super Ghanta Offer, but apparently this ignited Ufone and instead of calming down it extended Super Ghanta offer from 13 hours (4 AM to 5 PM) to 24 hours, meaning that Ufone customers with this offer can make round the clock hourly calls to all Ufone, PTCL and Vfone numbers at Rs. 3.50 plus tax (and with daily rental).
This counter attack by Ufone is not limited to this move only, as Ufone actually started advertising its rates as 6 Paisa Per minute, to shot down Telenor’s 10 Paisa Per min promotion.

So let’s see where this one to one war will end, we are yet to see Telenor’s move, however it looks extremely tough for Telenor to produce a shocker in this situation.
Looks like customers are enjoying this tussle and they are getting more than what was expected. On the other hand, Ufone is using its non-SMP status and offering the most it can.

PTA Intends to Monitor Telephony Traffic

Posted by Bilal Ahmed On Tuesday, September 8, 2009 0 comments

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has drafted a regulation called, “Monitoring and Reconciliation of Telephony Traffic Regulations, 2009”, and has asked industry to give input on said draft before September 16th, 2009.
As per intended regulation, all telecom service providers will install system at their own cost to make it possible for authority to monitor telephony traffic.
Regulation says that such a monitoring system should have at least following features
Capability to monitor, control, measure and record traffic in real-time;
Capability for complete signaling record, including but not limited for billing;
Capability to accurately measure the quality of service;
A complete list of the Pakistani customers; and
Complete details of capacity leased by the licensee(s) to their customers.

....Type rest of the post here
Once regulated, this monitoring system will enable PTA to check and analyze voice and data traffic flowing in and out of a network, from inside and outside the country.
Draft says that purpose of this regulation is to monitor and enforce the accurate presentation of the total traffic terminated through networks to measure and record for billing verification, detect & control grey traffic, and determine the quality of licensed services.
Telecom companies are apparently not happy with the situation. They didn’t comment over the issue, however, they showed their reservations over deploying additional system at their cost for multiple reasons.
On other hands, consumers have shown their reservations over monitoring of their voice and data calls. Their protest is very natural as no one would want anyone to hear his/her phone call – despite the fact that its not exclusively mentioned in draft that authority will intercept calls.
It merits mentioning here that PTA had proposed ICH (International Clearing House) last year for similar purpose; however, this regulation is more than what ICH originally was.
Government is apparently more interested in calculating the amount of minutes to well tax the companies instead of intercepting calls, as Interior Ministry already has exclusive rights to track and monitor voice traffic of the country.
Recently PTA had asked ISPs to monitor all data traffic and to block VoIP traffi, which didn’t get good response from the industry.
