Mobile Handset Snatching On The Rise In KarachiThe mobile handset snatching has been on the rise in the Karachi as an average 3,000 cases are reported every month in the city of highest cellular tele-density in Pakistan.

Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) Karachi latest statistics suggested that the number of crimes cases reported against handset snatching has been reached more than 30,000 from January to October 2010 in the city. Cell_Phone_Snatched-TheftThe average incidents of mobile handset snatching was almost same as 3,000 per month in the last fiscal year 2009-10.

The CPLC registered the cases itself on the request of victim of the crime at their centers or through online forms. It also obtained their information on the local police stations of Karachi.

It is believed that the cases registered in CPLC office or police stations are very few as compared to the original crimes incidents of mobile handset happened in the city. The number of crimes has almost three times higher than reported as a matter of fact that people are reluctant to approach police officials and to inform CPLC.  According to them, around 9,000 crimes of cell phone are committed in the city means 300 everyday.

The attitude of Police officials are so rude that common man is very much scared or hestitant to visit the local police station. However, people who do contact Police are not treated legally and asked to write a report instead of lodging FIR, which is a legal and documented complaint.

In most of the incidents, the victims’ mobile handsets were snatched at gun point by motorcyclists mostly. Some of them were deprived from their other valuables while few of them were killed unfortunately.

People in the media said that it is a rare scene that police recovers snatched or theft mobile handsets from criminals.

Users opt for low-cost handsets

According to an estimate, more than 120 million connections of different companies are operated in Karachi and its nearing cities. The rising handset crimes forced them to buy low-cost handset to protect them from lost of costly handsets.

Higher crime rate related to hand gadgets  is one of the reasons that people are more interested to carry Chinese-made set, which have not only low prices comparatively but they are copycat of branded handsets.
