According to Nokia’s global consumer survey on recycling, only 3% of people recycle their mobile phones despite the fact that on average most have several old devices lying around at home they no longer want. 74% of people said they don’t think about recycling their mobile phones while 50% of the people were unaware that it is possible to recycle mobile phone.
Previously we cover the story about the Nokia Recycle Program Coming to Pakistan, Today Nokia Pakistan announced the launch of its recycling program in Pakistan. The program will have recycle boxes at all 9 Nokia Care centers across the country. The initiative is launched to invite the mobile phone users to recycle their old phones with Nokia. The company committed to highest, international environmental standards in the recycling process. Nokia operates the world’s largest voluntary mobile phone recycling scheme with more than 5000 collection points in 85 countries.
Nokia takes environmental aspects into account along the entire product life-cycle, from the materials in the products and their energy efficiency, to product take-back and recycling options, and smaller packages.
“Nokia’s goal is to support environment-friendly lifestyle by offering consumers the opportunity to deliver any brand of the old and obsolete cell phones easily at the nearest Nokia Care center for recycling. Various studies indicate that unused equipment can be found in many consumer desk drawers. While such phones may seem worthless, the material can be reused to make new products. Everything in a Nokia phone can be recycled so that nothing is wasted and nothing goes to a landfill. If every Nokia user recycled just one unused phone at the end of its life, together we would save nearly 125,000 tonnes of raw materials” said Adeel Hashmi, Country Communications Manager, Nokia Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“To promote recycling as a common practice, it is important to know what mobile phone recycling means and how easy it is to recycle. We want to help overcome some of the barriers to recycling phones, like worrying about losing the numbers or photos you’ve got stored on your phone. Nearly half of these are sitting unused in people’s drawers. As part of our recycling program, we’re helping consumers, retailers and our service network to bring those phones back for recycling.” said Reza Burney, Care Manager, Nokia Pakistan & Afghanistan.
