A recent study from the Journal of Applied Microbiology says viruses can easily be transferred from nonporous glass surfaces, such as the touch screen of an iPhone — up to 30 percent of a virus can be transferred from the screen of your device to your fingers. A separate British study Journal of Applied Microbiology says mobile phones are covered with up to 18 times more bacteria than a toilet handle.

Increase in Mobile Phone Usage while Driving

Posted by Bilal Ahmed On Friday, October 22, 2010 0 comments

According to a latest survey, nearly four out of 10 motorists admit that they are being distracted by calls, texts and other social media applications on their mobile phones.img2_xW7pl_22619
A driver’s mobile phone is likely to ring or beep at least once during an average 23-minute journey, with 53% admitting to taking their eyes off the road to check who a call is from, and 45% admitting checking who has sent them a text.

Research by RAC: Conducted in September with 1,009 British motorists, the survey also found 21% of drivers admit to using other social media and communications features of web-enabled mobile phones. Among these, the most popular activity was using email, ahead of checking Google Maps, listening to music, and even viewing photos and using social networking site Facebook. The figures looked at the behavior of people while they were either driving, or stationary in the car – for example at traffic lights or in heavy traffic – with the engine running.
FrontMobile Usage Causing Road Accidents: They follow the organization's Report on Motoring 2010, which found a significant rise in the proportion of people admitting to taking a call without using a hands-free kit. Some 28% admitting fielding a call – up from 8% the previous year – while those admitting to sending texts rose from 11% to 31%. And while almost half of drivers polled claimed that that receiving calls or sending texts does not distract them, the RAC is highlighting Department for Transport figures for 2009 which found that 509 people were injured in accidents caused by drivers using a mobile phone, with 13% of this number being seriously injured or killed. RAC motoring strategist Adrian Tink said that many drivers seemed not to be aware that using a mobile phone in a vehicle with the engine running – even if it is stationary – is an offence.
Law to Be Enforced Strictly: The organization is now calling for existing laws to be strictly enforced. “It’s extremely concerning that the use of mobile phones for texting and calling has risen in the past year,” Tink added. “It is also worrying that people are admitting to using their mobile phone for a whole host of social media applications while driving. “Taking your eye off the road, just for a second, to read an alert or check who a call came from can have potentially fatal results.”

If your kids have been asking for a mobile phone, but you’re not quite ready to deal with yet another monthly bill then these Electronic Text Messengers from Scholastic are in a way like walkie talkies for texting.
Features: These Scholastic Text Messengers can create a network with up to 24 other units, messages are truncated at 40 characters and provide text message functionality without all that messy payment stuff. The keyboard looks sort of like the RIM multi-tap keyboard of yore and at $16.99. This device includes 2 electronic messengers – one for you and one for a friend. It can store up to 14 messages and it also works through walls.

Mobilink has admitted the fact that major revenue push in the telecom industry is because of the youth segment which is utilizing the telecom services the most.

Telenor with its product ‘djuice’, Ufone with its product ‘Uth’, Warid with ‘Glow’ and Zong as an entity itself are capturing the youth segment. Therefore, Mobilink felt that they should have their old youth brand OCTANE revived with new look and feel. This upcoming Youth Brand is likely to surface in November 2010.

Competition in Telecom Industry: Mobilink, for long, tried to cope with Youth with their primary brand Jazz, however, with time Jazz has turned out to be more of a generic brand. Specialized package for youth, Jazz Octane couldn’t leave the impact due to its daily rental, at the same time, pricing and publicity didn’t match the competition. Maybe its little late, but Mobilink has rightly identified the need of a Youth Brand, because it is the youth that has revolutionized the scope of the mobile industry from being just an ordinary mobile phone calling/receiving device to becoming a texting, web connected, instant messaging, and social networking phenomenon.

Target Audience: Target audience for this upcoming brand is said to be between 15 to 25 years of youngsters.

Offerings: Keeping in view the Mobilink’s recent (hourly) offers, Mobilink will try to come up with special treat for youth, who are usually hard to impress these days. It is sure that Mobilink will retain its focus on SMS and internet GPRS packages to grab the attention.

Official Advertising Agency: The agencies have presented their concepts to Mobilink but Red Communication Arts is already celebrating their winning as they have a consent from the Mobilink Head of Marketing on the grant of being the official advertising agency of Mobilink.

According to United Nations’ recent report, mobile phones are spreading faster than any other information technology and thus they can improve the livelihoods of the poorest people in developing countries.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development said in its Information Economy Report on Thursday, that the governments must design responsive policies to ensure that the benefits reach the broadest number in the most effective way.
Mobile Phone Subscriptions: Mobile phone subscriptions will reach five billion this year — almost one per person on the planet, UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi told a news conference on the report. Penetration in developed countries is over 100 percent, with many people having more than one mobile phone or subscription. In developing countries, the subscription rate is now 58 per 100 people, and rising rapidly, with the rate in the poorest Least Developed Countries (LDCs) up at 25 from only 2 per 100 a few years ago, UNCTAD figures show. The potential of mobile phones in developing countries has been highlighted by the efforts of Russia’s Vimpelcom to tie up with the telecoms assets of Egypt’s Orascom, which include Algerian operator Djezzy that Algiers wants to nationalise.

Mobile Phones for Rural Population: Governments need to monitor how poor people are using mobile phones and design policies to build on that. And they must ensure that poor people can use their mobile phones — at the end of 2008 almost half the rural population in LDCs were not covered by mobile signals.

Offering Employment: UNCTAD said the economic benefits of mobile phones, whose use in LDCs far outstrips technologies such as the Internet or fixed-line phones, go well beyond access to information. Mobile phones have spawned a wealth of micro-enterprises, offering work to people with little education and few resources. Examples are selling airtime on the streets and refurbishing handsets.

Affordability: The key to successful use of mobile is affordability, the report argues, a lesson not learnt by many African states. “India has shown us the way in making it as cheap as possible so everyone can gain access to this kind of equipment,” Supachai said.
