Mobile phones  in the country has increased its imports sharply- as almost a 100 per cent increase in terms of its imported cost in the first month of the current fiscal year 2010-11, was reported.
Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) figures showed that the import bill of mobile handset reached 39 Million $ in the month of July against the same months cost last year stood at 19.59 million us dollars, showing a 50.23 percent growth. According to a Daily Times report, the gadgets imports cost was also 27 per cent higher compared to the month of June, when it reached 30.8 million US Dollars.
The ballooning handset import bill indicates the increasing number of handset units of different brands, particularly the Chinese-made mobile handsets. Also the devaluation of the rupee against dollar has contributed the impact to double the amount of handsets imports.
The demand witnessed a constant surge in the last fiscal year 2009-10, in spite of the fact that duty remained steady at 250 rupee per unit.
